Edna Mae Drake died Feb. 10, 2014, at age 96. She was born in Burnwell, W. Va., on Jan. 28, 1918, to Nancy Jane and Chester Frisby. She was married to Charles Leo Drake from Aug. 14, 1935, until his death in May 1976.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol Nickey and husband Carl of Brazil; four grandchildren, Chuck and Lynn Nickey of Huntsville, Ala., Brad and Shelly Nickey of Hillsboro, Wis., Jeff and Sandy Nickey of Hartland, Wis., and Suzanne and John Parsons of Fishers. She enjoyed visits from nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Charles E. Drake; four sisters and one brother; and a great-granddaughter.
Edna was a survivor from the time she was born at home with a weight of 21⁄2 pounds. She was placed in a cigar box near the fireplace with minimum expectations of living. Her early life included not only the Great Depression, but also several years in an orphanage. When her children were teenagers, she began working at Shultz Department Store and later at the WigWam Skating Rink. She enjoyed traveling, dancing and music. Her sharp wit and “spunky” attitude will be missed by many friends and family.
A special thank you to Cobblestone’s “Memory Care Area” and the loving care provided by all the nurses and personnel at the facility. Also a grateful thank you to Genitiva Hospice for their help and care the past few weeks.
