Elveira Harthan

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Elveira Harthan, 75, of Martinsville, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind. She was born Jan. 10, 1938, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Herbert A. Barber and L. Elaine Wiser Barber.  On Sept. 3, 1971, she married Charles E. “Hap” Harthan. “Hap” passed away on April 26, 2002.

Survivors include her daughter, Dawn H. Wallace and husband Henry of Martinsville; her son, Dale E. Harthan of the Dominican Republic; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and extended family; and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Harold Logue; her husband, “Hap” Harthan; and her infant son, Glen Eric.

Elveira was a 1956 graduate of Martinsville High School and she attended Indiana State University. She worked at Pap-R-Products Printing for over 29 years. For more than 25 years, Elveira watched over and led the Martinsville Food Pantry, serving residents in Martinsville and the surrounding area. Elveira was a life-long member of the Martinsville United Methodist Church.

In addition to helping people in need and having an abiding love for her family and friends, Elveira had an active, life-long interest in music. The range of her soprano voice was “legendary.” Upon request, she would sing solos and in ensembles. She participated in her church choir, the Masterworks Chorale at Indiana State University, Community Choir performances in Marshall, Ill., in local musical productions (Far Off Broadway Players, among others), and more recently, in the March 2013 performance of Handel’s Messiah at Casey United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at the Martinsville United Methodist Church, 115 N. Washington St., in Martinsville, with the Revs. Dr. Donald Graham and John N. Gartelos officiating. Burial will follow in Bean Cemetery, Cleone, Clark County, Ill. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 3, 2013, at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Martinsville United Methodist Church, 115 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL 62442 or Martinsville Food Pantry, PO Box 533, Martinsville, IL 62442.  Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville, is in charge of the arrangements.
