Herbert Shaffner

MARSHALL, Ill. — MARSHALL, Ill. — Herbert Shaffner, 89, of Marshall, passed away Friday evening, April 19, 2013, at Burnsides Community Health Care Center in Marshall. He was born May 14, 1923, in Martinsville, Ill., the son of Tennis Shaffner and Clara Spittler Shaffner. He married Violet Saiter on March 11, 1944. He was a retired jeweler having worked at Hillman Jewelers in Terre Haute, Ind., for 42 years.

Surviving are his wife, Violet; a daughter, Sheila Shaffner Shotts of Marshall; a granddaughter, Kaylee Marie Shotts of Marshall; a brother, Jack Shaffner of Martinsville, Ill.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Gene Shaffner, George Shaffner, Frank Shaffner, and Wayne Shaffner; and two sisters, Nellie Weppler and Betty Hardway.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marshall, Clark County Post 90 of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5975, Marshall Lions Club, was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Trophy and was a graduate of Martinsville High School. He loved having coffee with his friends in the morning and was an avid sports fan.

He served his country in the U.S. Army in Guam during World War II in the 871st Signal Co.

Services in honor of his life will be 2 p.m. CDT Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Pearce Funeral Home, 314 S. 6th St., in Marshall with the Revs. Richard Lewis and David Deal officiating. Burial will be in Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted in honor of his service to our nation by VFW Post 5975 and Clark County Post 90 of the American Legion. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Herbert Shaffner Memorial Fund.
