TERRE HAUTE —
Barbara Jean Steward, 76, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Union Hospital, in Terre Haute. She had worked for many years as a security guard for Pinkerton Security. She also worked many years as a nurse’s aide at Meadows Manor North Retirement and Convalecsent Center, and also many years as a foster grandmother with the Vigo County Foster Grandparents Association. She was born June 27, 1937, in Terre Haute, to Jesse Clark Knott and Helen Belle Shoppe Knott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everard Lee Steward, on Oct. 9, 1993.
Survivors include their children, Sue Gray of Terre Haute, Joseph Michael Steward and wife Pam of Terre Haute, John Marcus Steward and wife Janice of Dennison, Ill., and Sandra Darlene “Sandy” Morgan and husband John of Martinsville, Ill.; nine grandchildren, James, Charles and wife Lisa, Kristopher, Amy, Josh, Jeremy, Jennifer, Travis, and Nicole; 12 great-grandchildren, Cierra, Kevin, Bryant, Tommy, Arianna, Candice, Savanah, Jayda, Chloe, Tyler, Tanner, and Alexander; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Ray, Paul, and Ralph Knott.
She was a member of New Providence Church, in rural Edgar County, Ill., and the Vigo County Senior Citizens Center. She had lived in Maryvale Apartments at St. Mary-of-the-Woods for 21 years. She had received awards from both the Meadows Manor and the Foster Grandparents Association. She enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with her family, and holding babies.
Funeral services for Barbara will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., West Terre Haute. Burial will be in New Providence Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and one hour prior to services Saturday.
