TERRE HAUTE — Max Frederick Walker, 89, life-long resident of Terre Haute, graduated to his eternal home Friday, June 21, 2013, at Signature Health Care, having been a resident there since February. He was born July 11, 1923, in Terre Haute, to Basil and Bess (Erne) Walker, both of whom preceded him in death.

Max was graduated from State High School, where he was a stellar varsity player for four years on their record breaking basketball team, highly rated in the state of Indiana. He then served from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in combat in Germany, France, and England, earning several honors, including the Bronze Star. He later graduated from the Terre Haute School of Watch Making.

Max was married Oct. 27, 1950, in Brazil, to Charlotte (Erxleben) Walker, long-time head librarian at the Terre Haute North and professor of library science at Indiana State. They were married nearly 48 years before her death in 1998, and had been avid travelers over the years to Switzerland, Spain, and other European countries, Hawaii, Central and South America.

He also worked many years with the Vigo County School Corporation and was a skilled locksmith and licensed jeweler and watchmaker.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Max was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Ray Walker.

He is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Ann Bedwell and son-in-law Ray Bedwell, missionaries who have spent 40 years in Monterrey, Mexico; granddaughter, Lori Lynn Bedwell of Monterrey; and grandsons, Kirk of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Kyle of Miami, Fla. He also has four great-grandsons, four great-granddaughters, and four great-great-grandchildren of Missouri, Florida and California; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins; and one sister, Betty Jane Smith.

Max, together with his wife was a member of First United Methodist Church for many years and active in Builders’ Class.

A service and celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 1 p.m., with visitation 1 hour prior to services. Military honors will be held at Highland Lawn Cemetery following the service. Officiating the service will be Ray Bedwell and Pastor AIfy Austin of World Gospel Church, with music by Dianna Clapp and Mimi Mech.
