Hazel Anita Mace Mayer

TERRE HAUTE — Hazel Anita Mace Mayer, 95, died at Royal Oaks Health Care, in Terre Haute, on April 16, 2013, at 9:32 a.m.

 A Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, in Brazil, on May 19, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. Moore Funeral Home, in Brazil, assisted with arrangements.

Born Feb. 21, 1918, in Harmony, she was the second of eight children born to Lewis Victor and Margaret Opal Butler Mace. She grew up in Clay and Parke counties, and graduated from Bridgeton High School. She graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing,  in Indianapolis, and began her nursing career working at Methodist Hospital. She married Charles Ross Mayer, in Plainfield, on Sept. 29, 1942.

Hazel was active in civic organizations and a member of the Friends Church, in Plainfield. After her husband, Charles, died she moved to Brazil and became an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Brazil.

Her parents; husband; a sister, Ethel Pell; and brother, Jim E. Mace; preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons, Charles Mayer and wife Phyllis of Evansville, Mark Mayer and wife Brenda of Plainfield; her daughter, Susan Boyd of McComb, Miss.; five grandchildren, Emily Williams of Evansville, Mark Mayer and Anita Worley, both of Plainfield, Don Gay and Christine Martin of McComb; seven great-grandchildren; her brothers, John and Victor Mace, both of Brazil; sisters, Edith Tucker of Terre Haute, Mary Hirt of Greencastle, and Jean Seville of New Albany; and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family wants to gratefully acknowledge the staff of the dementia unit at Royal Oaks who so lovingly cared for Hazel during the last three and a half years. They provided a loving atmosphere and exceptional care.
