Walter Earl Day

CLAY CITY —  Walter Earl Day, 82, of Clay City, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, May 5, 2013, at his home. Earl was born May 7, 1930, in Tipton, Ind., the son of Walter and Ida (Ryan) Day. He enlisted in the United States Navy in May of 1948.  Many of his years in the service were spent on the destroyer USS Hanson. He served his country for nearly 10 years and was honorably discharged in 1957. He married Ruth Stepler Aug. 5, 1954.

Earl worked as a carpenter with the Carpenters Union 133 and for eight years he worked building medical buildings with Marshall Erdman and Company. He also helped in building many bridges and commercial buildings throughout the Midwest.

Earl was proud of his military heritage and had been a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his free time he enjoyed mowing, fixing most anything, working on his rental homes and watching sports on television.

In addition to his parents Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Day; a brother, Carl Day; three half brothers, Donald Stout, Bob Stout, and Johnny Stout; and two half sisters, Gloria Stout and Gladys Love.

Earl leaves behind a daughter and son-in-law, Luann Rea-Horton and husband John; a grandson, Thomas Rea and wife Christina; two great-granddaughters, Kennedy Rea and Marley Rea, as well as a very close friend Dale Zurcher; and many extended family members.

Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 East Eighth Street, Clay City, Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Sumner officiating. Burial will follow at Beech Cemetery with military honors provided by members of the local VFW and American Legion as well as United States Navy. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday, from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled Veterans of America P.O.
