Sister Mary Eymard Campeggio

Sister Mary Eymard Campeggio, age 101, died at 5:42 p.m. on Nov. 19, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Sister was born in Ladd, Ill., on May 21, 1912, to Michael and Mary Perucca Campeggio, and was baptized Madeline Emma.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Aug. 18, 1931, and professed final vows on Jan. 23, 1939. In her 82 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered her first nine years as sacristan at the Motherhouse. Her next 36 years were given to the ministry of food service in convents in Indiana; Illinois; Washington, D.C.; California and Massachusetts. Beginning in 1967, she ministered at Providence Retirement Home in New Albany, Ind., as dietitian and food service director. Having retired in 1984, she remained there for 16 more years, serving as sacristan along with other convent duties. In 2000, she moved to the Motherhouse, serving in a variety of ways until 2002, when she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.

Sister Mary Eymard had a beautiful countenance that gave expression to her generous, loving heart. Her smile, radiant and welcoming, touched all who met her.

Sister Mary Eymard is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by sisters Josephine Garzonio, Theresa Jalley and Martha Humble; and two brothers, Peter and Joseph Campeggio. The wake will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, with the Reverend Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial will be in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Home — Wabash Avenue Chapel assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
