BRAZIL — Russell Monroe Stoms, 89, of Brazil, passed away at Cloverleaf Health Care on Oct. 29, 2013, following a lengthy illness.
Russell was born in Knightsville, Ind., on Nov. 14, 1923, the son of Russell C. and Brenetta (Northway) Stoms. He graduated from Van Buren High School in 1942 and then joined the United States Navy. He served his country in both World War II and the Korean War, and was honorably discharged after nine years of service. Russell worked for Boeing’s Rocketdyne and Hughes Aircraft in Simi Valley, Calif., for many years. He retired to Las Vegas, Nev., before returning home to Brazil in 2004.
Russell married Betty Carter on Sept. 21, 1952; she preceded him in death in 2007.
He was a member of Fairview Christian Church.
Russell spent much of his retired life traveling and playing golf.
In addition to his wife, Russell was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth France and Maralynn Rosa, sister-in-law Ruth Carter, and brothers-in-law Ray Carter and Roy Carter.
He was survived by three nieces, Jane Douglas and husband Owen, Christina Stinson, and Jean Ann Carter, all of Brazil; a nephew, Joe Rosa and wife Nancy of Greencastle; great-nephews Jim Zentko and wife Cassie of Brazil, and Jeremiah Rosa and wife Missy of Greencastle; and great-great-nephew Dylan Zentko.
Services for Russell will be at noon on Friday, Nov. 1, at French Funeral Home, with Pastor Steve Ford officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday.
