Traci Kay Miller

BRAZIL — Popular artist and teacher, Traci Kay Miller, 55, of Brazil, died Friday evening at her home following a courageous battle with ALS.

Mrs. Miller had most recently taught elementary school art for Clay Community Schools at Jackson Township Elementary School and Forest Park Elementary School until her retirement in 2011. Prior to this, she taught art for Vigo County School Corporation and at St. Gabriel and St. Matthew Elementary Schools in Indianapolis.

An independent business woman, Traci was the founder of Peridot Ranch Jewelry/TK Design, a custom jewelry business that featured her original creations, many crafted from precious stones.

After graduating from Brazil High School in 1976, she attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where she majored in Fine Art. Traci left IU temporarily after marrying Brazil native Bradley Miller in 1979 and starting a family. In 1990, Traci completed her studies at IU, receiving her Bachelors of Science degree in education. She also accepted an invitation to participate in the gifted student artists program at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. In 2009, she earned a Master’s Degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Traci was a versatile artist and highly regarded for her finely detailed color sketches of plants, flowers, birds and college campuses - in particular her beloved IU. She worked tirelessly for the past three years to fund ALS Research and supported the fundraising efforts by selling her cards and draings throughout the Wabash Valley and beyond

She and her family have been members of First United Methodist Church for many years and when her children were young she helped with vacation Bible School.  Traci and Brad enjoyed spending time with their sons, traveling to different climates including snow skiing.

Born Feb. 4, 1958, in Brazil, to Jim and Barbara (French) Ringo, Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by both of her parents; by a son, Zachery, who died May 13, 1981; and her grandparents, Don and Katherine French and Harvey and Alma Ringo.

Traci is survived by her husband of 34 years, Brad; and two sons, Joshua, Washington, D.C., and Samuel, Bloomington, Ind.; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Sharon Ringo of Marietta, Ga., father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Margie Miller of Brazil; sister-in-law, Mary Gottsche and husband Rick; brother-in-law, Kehrt Miller and wife Becky; the Miller cousins, Greg Miller, Nick and Hillary Miller, Milo and Pam Miller and Mike Miller; nieces, Ashley Swearingen and husband Danny of Terre Haute, and Erin Thompson and husband Kyle of Center Point; uncle, Dr. Charles French and wife Susie of Brazil; and extended family, and a host of friends and colleagues.

Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., in Brazil, with Gary Scroggins officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  The family requests that memorial donations be made to the ALS TDI Research, 300 Technology, Suite 400, Cambridge, MA. 02139 or Hospice of the Wabash Valley.  Light a candle in her memory at:
