She retired as a dental assistant and had worked for Dr. Carl McKee and later retiring from Dr. Luke Staley’s Dental Office in Terre Haute after 17 years of service. She was a patient advocate and enjoyed this job very much. She was born Feb. 17, 1947, in Terre Haute, to John Samuel Edwards and Edna L. Brownfield Edwards.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, William L. Smith, whom she married on Nov. 26, 1966, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Terre Haute; their two children: daughter, Teri Smith Joy of Indianapolis and son, Greg Smith and his wife Karen of Fishers; three sisters, Constance A. Edwards, Etta L. Harris, and Deanna L. Tanner; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn Smith, Jenna Smith, and Sam Smith, all of Fishers; and her father-in-law, William Smith of West Terre Haute. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John S. Edwards Jr.; two sisters, Harriet Ann Edwards and Connie Kay Edwards; and her mother-in-law, Mary Smith.

From the birth of her first child in 1968, Geri has been the beloved mom of two children who both graduated from Indiana State University and have been successful in their chosen careers. She was always a strong supporter of any organization or activity that they were involved in. During her children’s early childhood years, Geri was an active member of St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village Catholic Church, where she served as a religious education teacher. From 1977 to 1986, she was an active supporter of the West Terre Haute Little League; from 1982 to 1990, she was a member of the West Vigo High School Booster Club; from 1982 to 1986, she was an active parent of the West Vigo High School Athletic Department; a strong supporter of the cross country teams, baseball teams, basketball teams and track teams. From 1986 to 1990, she was an active parent with the West Vigo Cheerleading squad, softball team, vikatone show choir and musical theater. Geri enjoyed having family gatherings, cooking, gardening, growing flowers and working in her flower gardens and sewing. She also was a big sports enthusiast, being a Pacers basketball fan, and a Colts football fan. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Terre Haute.

Mass of Christian burial for Geri will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 113 S. 5th St., in Terre Haute, with Friar Mark Weaver officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute, with a service in celebration of her life at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Chris Wilbur. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society with envelopes available. The family would also like to give a special thank you to the nursing staff and management of the Union Hospital third floor and Intensive Care Unit, the Doctors at Union Hospital especially Dr. Pappas, Dr. Dultz, and Dr. Desai, and the Hux Cancer Center for the kind, loving, exceptional care that they provided to Geri and her family.
