TERRE HAUTE — Margaret Ann Hoggatt, 86, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 3:39 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, in IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Ind.

She retired from the Vigo County School Corporation, where she had been a business teacher at West Vigo High School for many years. She began teaching at Crawfordsville High School in Crawfordsville, Ind., and had also been employed with Alis Chalmers in Terre Haute.

She was born April 28, 1927, in West Terre Haute, to James T. Richardson and Marie Snack Richardson. She was preceded in death by her husband William Lee Hoggatt, whom she married in October of 1950 in the Bethany United Church of Christ in West Terre Haute. Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Barnett of South Whitley, Ind., and Brenda Jerrels Johnson and her husband David of Indianapolis; a son, David Hoggatt and his wife Betsy of Pittsboro, Ind.; a sister, Carolyn Carrier; and five grandchildren, Katie Barnett, Erin Jerrels, Will Hoggatt, Meredith Hoggatt and Joe Hoggatt.

Margaret was a member of the St. Mark United Church of Christ, and a graduate of Valley High School in West Terre Haute and Indiana State University. She was active in the Terre Haute Kennel Club and the Wabash Valley Master Gardeners. She was a supporter of the Vigo County 4-H, the Historical Society and Indiana Preservation Society, the Indiana Gourd Society and the Terre Haute Spay and Neuter League, and she had also been actively involved in the planning and organizing of the Valley High School class reunions.

Funeral services for Margaret will be 10 a.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and before services Monday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Master Gardeners Association or The Terre Haute Spay and Neuter League, or to the charity of the donor’s choice, with envelopes available in the funeral home.
