Helen M. Layton, 81, of Terre Haute, passed away at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, in Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born July 12, 1931, in Terre Haute, to William Shelton and Mary Coster Shelton.
Helen was a homemaker. She was a former member of Eighth Avenue Baptist Church. She collected Elvis memorabilia, enjoyed country music and listening to bands, playing cards, and loved to shop.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Charles Shelton.
She is survived by her husband, Richard E. Layton, whom she married Sept. 6, 1950; and daughters, Victoria Burchfield and her husband Gary of Terre Haute, Sondra Fortner, and Karen Smith and her husband James, all of Tennessee. She also is survived by her brother, Hershel Shelton of West Terre Haute; her grandchildren, Jennifer Aldrich, Angelina Berto, Steven McConnell, Rebecca Congleton, Michael Scott, and Megan Auterson; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews; and her best friend since grade school, Mary Ellen.
In honor of Helen's wishes, cremation has been chosen. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, 2128 Eighth Ave., in Terre Haute.
