Nancy B. Pillon, 95, of Terre Haute, passed away at 9:37 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. She was born on July 28, 1917, to Grannis Bach and Evelyn (Crawford) Bach, in Jackson, Ky. In 1942, at age 25, Nancy was among the first group of Women to join WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in the United States Navy. She served in WAVES for five years as a communications officer who decoded and encoded top secret messages for the military. After her discharge as a lieutenant, she continued her career in education. Nancy received the doctor of education degree from the University of Kentucky. She served on the library science faculty at Northern Illinois University and was a library science professor at Indiana State University. She, like her other family members, was an avid and excellent bridge player.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Steve Bach, Mary Marshall, and Josephine Porterfield. She is survived by her son, Richard Crawford Bach of Topeka, Kan.
Memorial services are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave. Family and friends are invited to come and share memories about Nancy from 10 a.m. until services at the funeral home on Tuesday.
