TERRE HAUTE —
Ruth Ione Harris, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away at 7:07 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She retired from Walmart in Terre Haute on Feb. 28, 2011, at age 86 after 20 years of service as a greeter. She also retired from the Vigo County Group Home for Children, after 12 years of service as the night security guard; as well as retiring from Chesty Foods in Terre Haute after 22 years of service. She also had been employed for eight years at Woolworths in Terre Haute, Allison plant in Indianapolis, and also served as a nurses aide at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Terre Haute.
Ruth was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Terre Haute, to Peter Randolph Garland and Nella May Jones Stout Garland. She graduated from Wiley High School on June 8, 1944 and was married on the following day June 9, 1944, to Floyd Raymond Harris.
Floyd preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1995, after 51 years of marriage. Survivors include three sons, Larry Ray Harris, Ronald Lee Harris and his wife Carolyn, and Robert Floyd Harris and his wife Martha Jane, all of Terre Haute; a daughter, Rebecca Ruth Harris Keller of Terre Haute; a foster daughter, Rose Lewis McNeil of Terre Haute; a foster granddaughter, Crystal Marie Lewis of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren, Dawn Kuhn (Mike), Rhonda Milton (Jim), Ron Harris (Jennifer), Brandon Harris (Megan), Miranda Harris (James Morris), Natalie Harris, Aaron Keller (Alexis), and Lindsey Urbain (Aaron); nine great-grandchildren, Sarah Kuhn, Michael Kuhn, Chelsey Milton, Sierra Milton, Emilly Milton, Allison Harris, Ethyn Harris, Kayden Ward, and Harley Shea Urbain; four great-great-grandchildren, Caden, Bryson, Colton, and Ahleigha Taylor; two special nieces, Brenda Nell Wilson Norris Barnett, and Vickie Lynn Wilson Gomolisky Bearley; two special nephews, Dennis Garland and his wife Elizabeth and Randy Garland; special friends, Carolyn Silver and Nell Hess: and several nieces, nephews, and cousins She also was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lela Stout Vanhorn, Lena Stout, Edna Garland, and Betty Garland Wilson and her husband Wilbur Wilson; three brothers, Roscoe Stout, Linville “Glenn” Garland, and Peter Randolph Garland; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was a member of Southside Church of the Nazarene. She was a longtime member of the Nazarene Church and had been a charter member of the Central Church of the Nazarene, later a member of the Eastside Church of the Nazarene. Ruth had been an active member serving as an adult Sunday school teacher and serving as mission president.
Funeral services for Ruth will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, in Southside Church of the Nazarene, 1901 S. 4th St., Terre Haute, IN 47802 with Pastor Kim Suits officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute, and also from 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday in the church. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the church with envelopes provided.
