Dale A. Newton

TERRE HAUTE — Dale A. Newton, 80, of West Terre Haute, a former educator at several area schools, passed away at 2:10 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, after an unprecedented, heroic, determined thirty-plus-year struggle against Parkinson’s disease. His mind and spirit were never vanquished but his body simply wore out. Dale was born on May 26, 1933, in St. Bernice, IN, to Lester Newton and Faye Nichols Newton. He loved the St. Bernice area and in spite of the limitations Parkinson’s placed upon him, he recently researched and compiled a history of the town and its inhabitants. Dale was creative and a gifted story teller who enjoyed making others laugh. He graduated from St. Bernice High School.

After serving his country in Hokaido, Japan, at the end of the Korean War, he returned home and attended Indiana State Teachers College. There he received his B.S. Degree. He was a letterman on the ISU track team and held the school record for the high jump for many years. He also was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon  “TKE” fraternity. He later returned to ISU to earn his “Master’s Degree” and eventually his “Sixth Year.”

His career as an educator began as a business teacher, assistant varsity basketball and track coach at Eminence Consolidated High School. After two years, he returned to Vigo County and West Vigo High School, where he continued to teach business and coach freshman basketball. He was very proud of the Mariah Club, which he and Steve Tucker founded. It was the first high school environmental skills club in Vigo County. Later he transferred to Terre Haute North, where he continued as a business teacher and junior varsity basketball coach. He was a popular teacher who genuinely liked his students and strove to get the most from them.

He was a Christian man, caring teacher, loyal friend and a loving husband and father. Dale truly loved life and pursued his many interests with an unmatched passion, zeal and joy.

Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Siner Newton, whom he married in 1959 in the Youngstown Methodist Church by the Rev. John Siner; their son, Mitchell Newton of West Terre Haute; a sister, Marlene Scott of Terre Haute; three sisters-in-law, Judy Siner, Shirley Ingram, and Lu Siner and brother-in-law Don Siner, whom Dale considered to be his brother; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean Newton.

Dale was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ in West Terre Haute. A member and past president of the Vigo County Teachers Association, a member of the Vigo County Retired Teachers Association, a member of the Indiana American Legion, and a member of Pimento Masonic Lodge No. 292 F & AM.

Funeral services for Dale will be 12 noon on Saturday, March 1, 2014, in Bethany United Church of Christ, 219 W. Miller Ave., West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Steve Moore officiating and Dale’s eulogy being given by his son Mitchell. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites provided by Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home and also 10 a.m. until service time Saturday in the church.

The family would like to give a special thank you for the excellent medical care he has been given by the Union Hospital Intensive Care Nurses and to Dr. Cristie, Dr. Maynard, and Dr. Koduru and other physicians and staff of Illiana Internal Medicine, NP Mrs. Lamar of the Veterans Clinic and the Visiting Nurses Association.

The family also suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethany United Church of Christ or the Providence Pantry or to Parkinson’s Foundation with envelopes available in the funeral home and the church.

Dale Newton, you were a wonderful good man whom we love so deeply. Our hearts are heavy from the void your passing leaves. Heaven, however, is a much richer place as you enthrall, enliven and entertain the heavenly hosts with your stories, humor, joyfulness and exuberant spirit. God blessed us with you.
