James M. Elrod Sr.

James M. Elrod Sr., 84, of West Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, in Burnsides Nursing Home, in Marshall, Ill. He had been a railroad engineer for many years retiring from CSX Railroad. He also was a master guitarist and musician having been inducted into the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame. He was lead guitarist and had played with many bands around the area for many years. He was born May 25, 1927, in Vigo County, to James Franklin Elrod and Myrtle Lily Copeland Elrod. His wife, Lily Bell Elrod, whom he married June 10, 1954, preceded him in death on May 27, 1998.

Survivors include his children, James Elrod Jr. of Marshall, Ill., Virgil Elrod and Darlene Elrod, both of West Terre Haute, Cherri Flowers-Lindsay of Marshall, Ill., John Elrod of Terre Haute, and Art Elrod of West Terre Haute; a brother, Terry Elrod; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Misty Lynn Elrod, Terry Simmons, and Greg Roberts Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Keith Lindsay, and Aiden Roberts; three brothers, Woody, Donald, and Tim Elrod; and a sister, Elizabeth Price.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, during which he was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park, with military graveside rites by the Vigo County Veterans Honorguard. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Friday. The pall bearers will be his grandsons. The family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor’s choice. The family would also like to thank the staff of Burnsides Nursing Home for all of their loving care.
