MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — Mildred D. Baughman, 96, a lifelong resident of Martinsville, passed from this life at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Cobblestone Crossing Health Campus in Terre Haute. She was born on June 6, 1916, in Salem, Ind., to the late Elmer and Edna E. (Shanks) Rush. She spent her childhood in Salem and graduated from Salem High School. Following high school, Mildred attended Ball State University and Hanover College obtaining her degree in art education.

On July 21, 1946 she married her true love, Ernest A. Baughman, and they shared nearly 44 years of marriage when he preceded her in death on May 9, 1990. Shortly after their marriage, she and Ernie moved to Martinsville making that their home.

She began teaching for the MSD of Martinsville in the mid 1950’s as an elementary art teacher traveling to each of the elementary schools in the district until her retirement in the mid- 1970’s. Mildred also was an active and dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, where she had been an elder and deacon over the years. She also held memberships in Tri Kappa, Art Club, Coterie Club, and P.E.O. She had a passion for reading and art which encouraged her to write and design children’s books, some of which she proudly published. Mildred also took pleasure in playing bridge, crossword puzzles, bingo and watching IU Basketball; however, her greatest pastime was time spent with her family.

She will be dearly missed and always remembered by her loving family and friends including her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda R. and Bill Green of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Lora (husband, Erik) Gierahn and Amanda Green, both of Milwaukee, and Andrew Green of Terre Haute; and six great-grandchildren, David, Xander and Lily Green, and Logan, Katelin and Charlotte Gierahn.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, April 14, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville, and on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
