TERRE HAUTE —
Robert H. Phillips, 78, of Terre Haute, former local educator, passed away on April 27, 2013 at Union Hospital, from complications of heart disease and diabetes.
Bob was the former principal of Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary School during the years 1967-1986, and he served as a teacher at Davis Park, Consolidated and Dresser, and an Indianapolis public school.
Born July 4, 1934, in Evansville, Bob was the youngest child of Henry and Mabel Seifert Phillips. Bob graduated from Evansville’s Central High School in 1952, and he was a leading cross country and track team member. Running, golf and basketball were his sports. He attended Indiana State University and received his bachelor’s, master’s and 6th-year degrees, and he was also a member of the cross country and track teams. He met his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann, while a college student. They were married at Maplewood Christian Church and remained members there. Their daughter, Nancy Phillips, DDS, lives in Tallahassee, Fla..
Bob will be remembered for his ability to inspire and encourage students, his caring ways and enthusiastic interest in teaching and student development. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Bob served in the U.S. Army as a company clerk in Germany, 1957-1959.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; daughter, Nancy Phillips Lasley and husband Bill; grandsons, Nathaniel and Eli Lasley; and step-grandsons, Will and Lucas Lasley; sister, Betty Phillips Grimes; niece, the Rev. Beth Arp and her husband the Rev. Skip Arp; and nephews, James, Mack, Sam and Mark Phillips. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Union Hospital and UAP Clinic for their kind and caring assistance.
A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Maplewood Christian Church, 2000 N. 13th St., conducted by Pastor Craig Wininger.
