Velma Doris Horton

TERRE HAUTE — Velma Doris Horton, 84, of Terre Haute, formerly of Paris and Marshall, Ill., and Sullivan, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Springhill Village in Terre Haute.

She was retired from the South Carolina School Board Media Center in Charleston, S.C. She had previously worked at the former Colson Garment Factory of Paris and after retirement at the Paris Public Library.

She was born May 30, 1928, in Oakland, Ill., the daughter of the late Leland and Imogene (Hanner) Swinford, She married Pastor Walter Thomas Horton on July 2, 1947, in Paris. He preceded her in death on March 24, 2012.

Survivors include two sons, James Albert (Patti) Horton of Bourbonnais, Ill., and John Thomas (Linda) Horton of Pensacola, Fla.; two daughters, Lela Jeanne (Chuck) Benninger of Terre Haute, and Joyce Anne (Sam) Mullenix of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Vada (Bud) Kirby of Paris, 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jerrold Lee Horton; a sister, Vera Henson; a brother, Vern Swinford; and two infant brothers.

Mrs. Horton was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Terre Haute and attended Bible Baptist Church of Terre Haute. She was a faithful and devoted pastor’s wife for more than 40 years, serving a number of small rural churches in Illinois, Indiana, South Carolina and West Virginia. She will be remembered by her children as the perfect example of a loving and sacrificing mother who always put the needs of her family ahead of her own.

For those who wish, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Services celebrating her life will be conducted at 2 p.m. CDT Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Templeton Funeral Home in Paris. Burial will be private on Monday at the National Cemetery in Danville, Ill.
