Ray McCarty

TERRE HAUTE — Ray McCarty, a long-time resident of the West Terre Haute area, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Davis Garden Health Center. In December of 2012 he celebrated his 100th birthday with his family and friends at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Born Dec. 3, 1912, in Linton, he was the son of Samuel McCarty and Jenny Fox McCarty.

He was the youngest of eight siblings and was preceded in death by his brothers, Elden and Basil; and sisters, Dorothy, Ines, Mary, Viola, and Alta.

Ray graduated from Garfield High School. He lived briefly in Chicago but most of his life was as a resident of Vigo County. Like his father and brothers he worked in coal mines most of his life. He was successful as a miner and loved his work. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

In June of 1941, Ray married Genevieve, and began a marriage of 70 years.  Genevieve preceded Ray in death on May 4, 2011.

He is survived by his children, Ron Highsmith and wife Ellen, Marsha McCarty and husband Bernard, Frank McCarty, Steven McCarty and wife Cindy, and Stanley McCarty and wife Diane; grandchildren, Belinda Pettrick, Deann Reppert, Douglas Highsmith, Michael Highsmith, Arthur Keith, Jay Record, Marshall Vires, Greg McCarty, Bart McCarty, Trina McCarty, and Eric Eskew; and a wonderful array of beautiful great-grandchildren that Ray continued to enjoy to the very end of life. He also was preceded in death by his granddaughters, B.J. Keith and Lora Clarey

Ray is remembered for his devotion to his family, for the many homes he helped build, for his love of poetry and science, his hobo stories, his joy of watching children grow and learn, and his non-stop life long reading of everything from Zane Grey to Shakespeare.

Memorial gifts may be made to Friends of the Vigo County Public Library.

A memorial service to commemorate a life well lived will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, in West Terre Haute, on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The gathering will begin at 1 p.m. with a service at 2 p.m.
