Helen I. Beard-Garrigus

SULLIVAN — Helen I. Beard-Garrigus was born unto this earth on March 24, 1923, to Sarah Cunningham-Downey and John Downey. She worked tirelessly as a nurse for over 40 years. She worked in the offices of Dr. Evans and Dr. Gailey and also for Vermillion County Convalescent Center and Vermillion County Hospital. She selflessly gave a lifetime of caring for each and every person around her.

She was a devoted member of Sullivan Wesleyan Church in Sullivan, and was inspired by the prayers and outpouring of well-wishes from her congregation.

She lived a long and healthy life and loved her family and friends to the fullest. She just recently celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by love, laughter and special memories. We must also mention her two feline companions, Vicar and John Boy, who made her life complete. She spent many years in her knitting circle in Rockville, handcrafting items for Riley Children’s Hospital.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Edgar Beard; second husband, Homer Garrigus; granddaughter, Angie Nolan; great-granddaughter, Kiera Snoddy; two sisters, Virginia and Mildred Downey; and two brothers, John William and Alva Downey. She is survived by her four daughters, Debra (Joe) Roberston, Barbara (Bob Carli) Snoddy, Rolla (Jerry) Boyll, and Nancy (Ray) Fellows; grandchildren, Carly (Mark) Ward, Ian Gruse, Carissa Wilson, Wade (Jennifer) Snoddy, Jake Boyll, Jeff Boyll, Lyle Robertson, and Jody (Troy) Owen; great-grandchildren, Brynna Ward, Harrison Snoddy, and Shelby and Dylan Owen.

A special thank you to Dr. Thomas Schmitz and his staff whose treatment made her feel at peace and comforted. Thank you to Dr. Chandra Reddy and her home healthcare nurse and companion Jennifer Padgett, and the entire Robertson family. Your strength and kindness is truly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Helen’s name to the American Cancer Society for the research and cure of breast cancer.

She walked with God in life, and walked with God in death. Her loving God and Savior guided her home on the morning of May 6, 2013. You will be missed. How Great Thou Art. You will forever be in our hearts. Arrangements were entrusted to Banks and Brust Funeral Home.
