Sister Estelle Scully, 86, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Oct. 8, 1926, in Evanston, Ill., to Vincent and Estelle McKiel Scully and was baptized Joan Estelle.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1949 and professed Final Vows on Jan. 23, 1957. She earned a bachelors degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a masters degree from the University of Notre Dame. In her 63 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered 23 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and California. She taught at Schulte High School in Terre Haute from 1957 to 1960 and at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College from 1961 to 1971 and 1975-76. She then gave 20 years to work in communications and public relations. The places she served include the diocesan offices of Orlando, Fla., Little Rock, Ark., and Casper, Wyo., and the Archdiocese of Miami. She returned to the motherhouse and volunteered in local ministries including Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, St. Ann Clinic and Providence Center. A person always interested in world issues and an avid follower of cinematic art, Sister Estelle enjoyed discussing these with others. Beginning in 2008, she dedicated herself totally to the ministry of prayer
She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent C. Scully Jr.
The wake is Monday, March 25, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial is Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
