BRAZIL — Joseph Russell Koch, 84, of Brazil, died at 1:14 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil. During his working years he worked close to agriculture. He was born June 12, 1928, in Nevins Township, on Kyle Avenue, in Vigo County, Ind., to the late Russell Lee Koch and Julia Irene Zambenini Koch.
On June 19, 1949, he married Mary Lou Handlin Koch at the home of her parents, John S. Handlin and Anna Spoor Handlin and she survives; also surviving, one son, John J. Koch and his wife Gloria Lawson Koch of Rockville; three daughters, Mary Ann Isaacs and her husband J. R. Isaacs of Terre Haute, Rebecca Jo Adams and her husband Ben Adams of Dana, and Sally Lee Elder of Terre Haute; one brother, James (Mary) Koch of Rosedale; one sister, Betty Andis of Rosdale; three grandsons, Monty R. (Wendy) Black of Crawfordsville, Jeff (Becky) Black of Rockville, John D. (Casey) Koch of Rockville; six granddaughters, Stephanie Stover of Brazil, Mindy Godfrey of Terre Haute, Laura (Chad) Lockwood of Clinton, Julie (Rob) Morris of Clay City, Angela Elder of Indianapolis, and Jennifer Swaim of Brazil; great-grandchildren, Dillion Swaim, Billie J. McClain, Kaitlin and Kennady Black, Christian Stover, Walker Joseph Koch, Lucy May Koch, Miya Sabla, Morgan and Wade Black, Alexandra Swaim, Carina Elder, Emily Morris, Abby Morris, Nathan Morris, Kai Godfrey, Marivell Godfrey and Carter Lockwood; and several stepgrand and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Bill Koch; grandson, Steven R. Swaim; and great-granddaughter, Avery Rose Morris.
He attended Fontanet School. In 1952 he joined the Fontanet E.U.B. Church and was baptized in Big Raccoon Creek into the Holy Church. After retirement he became interested in his township history publishing a book on Nevins township history in 2004.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, in Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 N. Main St., in Rosedale, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.
