Charles Dale Campbell

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Charles Dale Campbell, 96, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Memorial University Medical Center, in Savannah, Ga. Born Nov. 5, 1917, in Danville, Ill., he was the son of the late Charles Gernand Campbell and Nelle Dale. He attended Danville High School and received a football scholarship to Indiana State College, in Terre Haute. Later, he made his home in Clinton, where he continued to have a residence.

Mr. Campbell was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters for 68 years, and a member of Local 157 in the Terre Haute district for 58. As a pipefitter and welder, he had the opportunity to travel the U.S., later working as foreman and supervisor for many well-known companies.

In addition to his parents and four sisters, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Humphries Campbell, originally from Savannah, who died in 1998; a daughter, Sally Campbell Pflederer, who died in 2008; and a grandson, J. Derek Ferando, who died in 2009.

He is survived by special friend and companion of 15 years, Jane Lawhon Humphries of Savannah; two daughters, Patricia Jean Dabels (James) of Irmo, S.C., and Dr. Nancy Dale Campbell of Indianapolis; one son, John Axon Campbell of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Bryan Dabels (Anne) of Madison, Ga., Scott Dabels (Kimberly) of Summerville, S.C., Lynn Busch (Kelly) of Irmo, S.C.,, and Natalie Campbell of Claremore, Okla.; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and family pets, Emmylou and Sophia.

Services will be held in both Savannah and Terre Haute. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home, with services Thursday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of personal choice. Online condolences can be made at:
