John William Shadow Jr.

TERRE HAUTE — John William Shadow Jr., 63, of West Terre Haute, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. He was born Aug. 19, 1950, in Terre Haute, to John William Shadow Sr. and Elizabeth “Betty” Passe Shadow. John and his father had co-owned and operated the Shadow Sign Company and the Shadow Auction Barn, both in Terre Haute, for many years. He had also been an operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 in Terre Haute and retired from Plant Brothers Excavating Company.  

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Jean Shadow, whom he married on July 4, 2000; a daughter, Kimberly Ann Howard and her husband Matt of Dewey, Ill.; three stepchildren, Tracy Hines of Terre Haute, Randy Hines and his wife Sarah of Lexington, Ky., and Jason Hines and his wife Megan of St. Joseph, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Tina Shadow of West Terre Haute; his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Shadow of West Terre Haute; 13 grandchildren, Zane Shadow, Justin Bryant, Monica Bryant, Austin Howard, Jenna Howard, Aaron McCullough, Caiden Lenover, Camren Lenover, Caleigh Lenover, Gavin Phelps, Lela Hines, Wyatt Hines, and Hazel Hines; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky and Jay Richardson of Terre Haute; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Duane and Cheryl Palmer of Dothan, Ala.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

John was preceded in death by two sons, Aaron Lee Shadow and John William Shadow III; and his father.

He had been a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 725 in Terre Haute. John had been involved in drag racing for many years. He was well known for his love of street rods and he enjoyed restoring and building street rods with his good friend, E. Dale Cassidy. He was a former member of the Terre Haute Corvette Club and the Wabash Valley Rodders Association. He was an avid Nascar fan and sports fan and enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts. He also enjoyed hanging out at their pool with family and friends, having cookouts and mowing and keeping their place looking nice.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Sunday. Cremation has been scheduled. The family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the John Shadow Jr. Memorial Fund with envelopes available in the funeral home. In honor of John’s love of street rods, feel free to drive yours to the service and there will be designated parking along the front of the funeral home.
