William John Anderson

TERRE HAUTE — Dr. William John Anderson, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, in Springhill Village. He was born Dec. 9, 1938, in Boston, to Nils Anderson and Ella (Geitan) Anderson. William was professor at the IU School of Medicine, Terre Haute Center for Medical Education, from 1975-2002.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Burke) Anderson, whom he married June 15, 1968, in Walpole, Mass.; sister, Evelyn Simm of Virginia Beach, Va.; niece, Ginny Baer of Holliston, Mass., nephew, Russell Simm of Holliston, Mass., nephew, Larry Simm of Natick, Mass., niece, Gail Batsim of  N. Andover, Mass,, Shirley Larosa of Manchester, Conn.,  niece, Diane Bomber of Payson, Ariz.; nephew, Robert Ziegler of Walpole, Mass., and family friends, Helen Peterson of Boston, and Jim Bennett of Dallas.

William was a 1956 graduate of Sharon High School in Sharon, Mass., a 1960 graduate of the University of Miami, then while working as a lab director at MIT in the Department of Physiological  Psychology, he moved to Indiana with Dr. Joseph Altman, who started a neurobiological program at Purdue University. Bill managed the lab and then went back to school at Purdue and earned his Doctorate of Neuroanatomy from the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1975, he accepted a position at the Terre Haute Center for Medical Education and taught neuroanatomy to first-year medical students. In addition, he was responsible for guiding five graduate students who received their Ph.D. degrees under his guidance and research.  Dr. Anderson also did grant reviews for the National Institutes of Health for four years with colleague Dr. Joe Marwah. Dr. Anderson did extensive research with the spinal column and developed a website for teaching and research. He was a member of the Riley and Lost Creek Conservation clubs, a former board member for United Cerebral Palsy and did extensive work with the National Institutes of Health. William loved gardening, cats, photography, stamp collecting, and being in or around the ocean. As per William’s request, cremation is scheduled with a Celebration of his Life at a later date. Burial of his cremated remains will be in Carver Middle Cemetery, in Carver, Mass. DeBaun Funeral Homes, Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, is in charge of arrangements.
