Earl R. Davis

TERRE HAUTE — Earl R. Davis, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Springhill Village, with family at his side. He was born Feb. 18, 1924, to Irven L. and Edna Hunt Davis. He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jean (Jeanie) Keegan, and she survives.

He also is survived by two daughters, Sandra L. Hayes and husband Bill of Riley, and Carla A. Gidorkis of Uniontown, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Tracy Burnett Caudill, Brian Caudill, and Matthew Hayes, all of Indianapolis, David Gidorkis of Stowe, Ohio, Laura Woods of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Jimmy Hayes and wife Rhonda of Jasonville. Other survivors include five great-grandchildren, Brandi and Cassie Caudill, Luke Gidorkis, Elyssa Woods, and Alissa Hayes; his brother, Max Davis of Terre Haute; and sister, Charlotte Elliott of Linton.

Earl joined the Prairie Creek Church as a young boy. He was very patriotic, and always displayed our American Flag. He was a lifetime member of Lawton Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 and Past Commander and life member of Riley American Legion Post 328. He loved family gatherings, camping, fishing, hunting mushrooms, gardening and grilling BBQ chicken over a wood fire pit. Earl loved spending winter months in Florida and did this for several years. He and his wife traveled through all U.S. states except Alaska. Most of these states he pulled an RV through and toured most of our National Parks. He didn’t understand people going to foreign countries if they hadn’t even seen all the beautiful places here in the USA.  During World War II he was in the infantry and was proud to have been in Merrill’s Marauder’s outfit. It later became Mars Task Force. This was in the China, Burma, India Theater. Their duty was to keep the Burma Road open in the Himalaya Mountains, and Earl was severely injured in Burma. In his early years he worked at his parents’ grocery store in Prairie Creek. Later he was employed at Lima Tank Depot in Lima, Ohio. He later transferred to the Terre Haute Post Office, and retired from there, and enjoyed several years of retirement. He will be truly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m., with Rob Scheid officiating. Burial will follow in New Harmony Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The Alzheimer's Association or Prairie Creek First Baptist Church. Online condolences may be left at:
