Michael James Capicik

TERRE HAUTE — Corporal Michael James “Capi” Capicik, 52, of Terre Haute, passed away  unexpectedly on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013. He became an Indiana State Police Trooper on Nov. 29, 1985, upon graduation from the Indiana State Police Forty Third Academy and was looking forward to retirement on Jan. 8, 2014, after 28 years of service. He was born May 3, 1961, in Madison, Wis., to John H. Capicik and Irmgard C. Quasigroch Capicik.

Survivors include his son, Kyle Wayne Capicik and wife Elise of Madison; his parents of Indianapolis; best friend and companion, Connie Gualano and her children and grandchildren, Melanie and Brian Payne and their children Emma and Cooper Payne; and Patrick Williams; his former wife and friend, Jane Capicik of West Terre Haute; sister, Yvonne Lazaretti and her companion Bob Smith of Victoria, Minn.; many relatives in Germany including aunts and uncles: Inge and Gunter Loescher, and Carl and Brigitte Quasigroch; two uncles, Paul Capicik of Alabama, and Carl Capicik of Wisconsin; nieces and nephews, John Latta, Cecilia Pierce and husband Chris, Jessica Fidler and husband Dave, Paul Payne and wife Nicole, Amanda Payne, Maegan Payne, Cody Conaty, Cami Payne and Camron Payne; his former mother-in-law, Joan Payne of West Terre Haute; two former brothers-in-law, Jeff Payne and wife Marcia, and Jim Payne, all of West Terre Haute; a former sister-in-law, Jean Conaty and husband Pat of West Terre Haute; cousins, Lisa Capicik, Steffen Capicik and wife Miriam, Holley Dunnigan and husband Dave, Jiri Capicik and wife Carley, Jesslyn Thompson and husband Chris, Nancy Hastings, and Marsha and Dick Koehler; two exchange students, Georgi Delev of Macedonia,and Do-Hoon Song of South Korea; and other relatives in Canada; and he will be sadly missed by his dogs which were special friends, Jeeves, Jazmin, Olivia, Snoopy, and Mia.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Catherine Capicik and Karl and Gertrud Quasigroch; his former father-in-law, Louie Payne; and several aunts and uncles in Germany.

Mike was a graduate of West Vigo High School Class of 1980. He then attended Indiana State University for three years prior to graduating from the ISP Academy. Mike always loved riding motorcycles and after becoming a state trooper he started the ISP Motorcycle Detail during which he was in charge of the Govenor’s Ride, served as an escort for the COPS Cycling 4 Survivors, and many other special details as well as being a member of the dive and rescue team. He served as the spokesman for the ISP reporting weather conditions with the local television and radio stations. He also served as “Trooper Teddy” during the Indiana State Fair. Mike had also been involved with the Indy Racing League where he was a tire specialist and crew member mainly with Beck Motorsports. He traveled overseas during the racing season with the team and was a member of the team during their win of the Michigan 500.

He was a member of the Terre Haute Lions Club for many years. He also loved doing snow removal and landscaping and he was always very concerned with keeping any neighborhood that he lived in cleaned up. He was a collector of model planes, trains, and automobiles and he loved detailing vehicles. He also was involved with the Vigo County Youth Soccer Association where he coached for many years.

Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with Father Glenn O’Connor officiating. Cremation has been scheduled after all services. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and prior to services Saturday in the funeral home. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society or the March of Dimes, with envelopes available In the funeral home.
