Billie R. Melvin

CLINTON — Billie R. Melvin, 94, of Clinton, went to be with The Lord on Dec. 20, 2013, at 3:40 p.m. at Clinton Gardens. Billie was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Terre Haute, to Raymond and Grace Melvin. He worked on the Milwaukee Railroad for 41 years and also for the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 157. Billie was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Lodge 86 Free & Accepted Masons, a member of Old Timers Railroad Club, and a retired member of Railroad Men’s Club. He was also a member of The Higher Ground Christian Center. Billie and his wife, Betty, were very active in The Foreign Exchange Program.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Melvin, whom he married on Nov. 20, 1942; his daughter, Julie West and husband Dale III; a brother, Jim Melvin; three sisters, Linda Ganzel and husband Marty, Mary Deitz and husband Howard, and Martha Abernathy. Billie had two grandchildren, Jordan and Alysia West; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ted Melvin and Joe Melvin; a daughter, Janice Voll; and Robert Overton, who Billie and Betty raised as a son.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the loving and caring staff at Clinton Gardens. Billie was one of their favorite residents, and they really enjoyed his sense of humor.

Services will be Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at 1 p.m. at The Higher Ground Christian Center Church, with a visitation on Friday from 11 a.m. until services, at the church.  Officiating will be Pastor Joe Mattox with burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.
