Russell E. Johnson, 62, of Osceola, and formerly of Terre Haute, died at noon, on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, with his loving wife at his side. Russ was born to Dorothy Carmen Johnson and John Johnson on May 7, 1951. He honorably served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. On Dec. 21, 1996, he married the love of his life, Patricia A. Willard.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; two stepsons, William Willard (Julie) of Granger and Edward Ashcraft (Jennifer) of Bourbon; three grandchildren, Hannah and Hayden Willard and Skylar Ashcraft; two step-grandchildren, Tyra and Hailey Fakes; five brothers, John, Butch, Tom, Walt, and Jay, all of Terre Haute; one sister, Mary Lou Rentauskas of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Steve; and one sister, Emily.
He worked as a delivery driver for Martin’s Central Bakery and had formerly worked at Monaco Coach in Elkhart.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 and a former quartermaster for American Legion Post 40, both in Terre Haute.
Russ was an avid golfer, and a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Bears. He loved Indiana University basketball as well as softball. In recent years, he coached and umpired girls softball at Eastside Little League. He loved all of “his” girls, especially Angela, Maria, Maggie, Mackenzie, Sammy, Alexa, Ki and many, many more.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, in Osceola. Cremation will follow. Special thanks to ICU nurses Dee and EJ, as well as Dr. Ansari.
