Alice M. (Bernhardt) Hofmann

CLAY COUNTY — Alice M. (Bernhardt) Hofmann, 93, a lifelong resident of Clay County, passed away at St. Vincent Clay Hospital, Aug. 1, 2013, following a brief illness. Alice was born May 25, 1920, the daughter of William Kyle and Anna Elizabeth (Fortner) Bernhardt. She graduated as valedictorian from Cory High School with the class of 1938 and married Lee A. Hofmann on Nov. 16, 1938. Alice and Lee shared 67 years of marriage together. Alice worked at Clay County Health Center for over 20 years, retiring as a food service manager.  

Alice enjoyed gardening and quilting. She will be remembered for her wonderful cooking ability and warm hospitality.  

Growing up she was a member of Cory Zion Church. Alice was a member of the Clay County 4-H Fair Board, Extension Homemakers Club and Prairie City Ladies Aid. She also had attended the Prairie City E.U.B. Alice was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 428 in West Terre Haute, where she had served as Worthy Matron.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Hofmann; a son, William “Frosty” Faustinus Hofmann; and siblings, Lester Bernhardt, Dorothy Hofmann, Nellie Champion, Edith Nicoson, and Juanita Marshall.

Alice is survived by three children, Martha Lewis (Gene) of Hardinsburg, Randy Hofmann (Debbie Rupp) of Macy, and Gretta Kumpf (Joe) of Tipp City, Ohio; grandchildren, Tina Goodnight (Mark), Brenda Hofmann (Jackie Wilson), Jeff Hofmann (Carolyn), Jay Hofmann (Cherié), Heather Lewis, Andrea Elgin (Todd), Mike Hofmann, Travis Hofmann, Arthur Kumpf II (Abigail) and Adam Kumpf (Maura); great-grandchildren, Clayton, Sabrina, Elsie, Lisa, Stephen, Austin, Dylan, Nicole, Willie, Griffin, Claire, Doyle, Ronald, Hope, Shannon, Wyatt, Vivian and Annette; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Services will be at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., in Brazil, Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bob Kumpf officiating. Burial will follow at Center Point Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home, Saturday, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Center Point Cemetery Association in her memory.
