James Dale Von Kannon I

James Dale Von Kannon I, 74, of Macomb, Ill., formerly of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, at his home in Macomb.

A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. CDT today, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, in Macomb, with the rosary read at 4:30 p.m. and the Christian wake at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at the church, with Monsignor Richard Pricco officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and burial of ashes will be held at a later date.

Because James was an avid gardener, the family requests that floral contributions be plantable.

James was born May 24, 1938, in Terre Haute, the son of James Manford and Anna (Jones) Von Kannon. He graduated from Garfield High School, the class of 1956. He attended school at Rose- Hulman, Indiana State University, University of Cincinnati and Western Illinois University of Macomb. He married Donna Rose Garry on May 21, 1960.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Donna Rose; his sons, James (Leah) of Galesburg, Ill., David (Shari) of Clarksville, Tenn., Donald (Debbie) of Monmouth, Ill., John (Mary Jo) of Galesburg, and Michael (Erin) of Macomb; a daughter, Christina Homan (Sean) of Macomb; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one niece, Kathy McMahan (Gene) of Terre Haute; one great-nephew; one great-niece; two great-great-nieces of Indiana; and a friend of the family, Mary Abbot.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Ann Lyons and brother-in-law, Leroy of Terre Haute.

He worked as a R&D specialist for Western Tar, Riley Tar Chemical and Metallurgical Engineer for Diamond Chain, BCA Ball Bearing Company, Federal Mogul Company in Greensburg, Ind., Detroit, and Macomb. He retired from NTN Bower Corporation of Macomb.

After retiring, he was involved in the community of Macomb, attending several city council meetings and also ran for local office as alderman at large. He was affiliated with St. Paul’s Catholic Church. His hobbies include collecting stamps, coins, gardening, woodworking and in his later years he was involved in genealogy. He loved to fish, bowl, play cards with family and friends, and study the Presidents of the United States.
