---- — MARSHALL, Ind. — Marvin Dale DePlanty, 80, Marshall, Ind., died Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at his home. He was born July 12, 1932, in Rockville, to Fred and Mallie Martin DePlanty. He married Donna Patricia Hiatt on July 13, 1952, in Rockville. They were married 60 years.

Other survivors include sons, Michael Dale (Charlotte) of Marshall and Steve of Warsaw; daughter, Michelle Leonard (Mark) of Springfield, Va.; grandchildren, Steven of Fort Wayne, Gabrielle (Jeremiah) Barney of Kingman, Jennifer (Rocky) Burkett of Aberdeen, S.D., Tyne (J.T.) Leonard, Nicholas Leonard of Newport News, Va., Mathew Foster and Morgan DePlanty; great-grandchildren, Annabelle Barney, Tien Leonard, and Ryder Burkett; and sisters, Florence Porter of Veedersburg and Eileen Shinn of Greencastle. He was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Akers and Dorothy Mathews.

He served as superintendent of Turkey Run Schools for 28 years, retiring in 1996.

His memberships included Marshall Federated Church, Bloomingdale Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine, Past President of the Sons of American Revolution and Charter member of the Elks Club and trustee.

He attended Wabash College and belonged to the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1954. He received his master’s degree and graduate work from Butler University in Indianapolis. He also served as principal of Kingman schools and as the first Principal of South West Fountain.  

He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and collecting antiques. They were affiliated with Cabbage and Kings of Crawfordsville.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, in Marshall Federated Church, 105 N. Main St., in Marshall, with the Rev. Don Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Grove Cemetery with military graveside honors by Parke County veterans.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials, should friends so desire, may be made to Marshall Federated Church, P.O.
