Roscoe ‘Rocky’ Morris

BRAZIL — Roscoe “Rocky” Morris, 92, of Brazil, passed away Oct. 1, 2013, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Coal City, the son of George Isom and Lydia Grace (Sommers) Morris. Rocky graduated from Clay City High School with the class of 1940. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Rocky worked for Amax Coal Company from 1940 until he retired in 1987. In addition to his work at the mine, he worked at White Brothers Television Repair Shop.

Rocky married Rachel Sue McDaniel Feb. 21, 1962; she preceded him in death in 1998.  Rocky was an avid gardener. He was a handyman who enjoyed “tinkering,” woodworking, doing electrical repair and was quite proud to be able to “hang wallpaper that a wallpaper hanger couldn’t hang.”

He was a member of the American Legion, United Mine Workers of America 228, and the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue Morris; an infant son; seven siblings, Juanita Ezra, Josephine Morris, Geneva McClure, Mary Spear, Virgil Morris, Ray Morris, and an infant brother.

He is survived by three children, Rebecca Lock and husband Steven of Terre Haute, Renda Trammell and husband Joey of Brazil, and Brian Morris and wife Amanda of Coal City; two stepchildren, Donald Porter and Shirlene Peterson; 10 grandchildren, Jeremy Lock, Taylor Lock, Hannah Watkins, Logan Watkins, Luke Morris, Jonathan Morris, Ella Morris, Ian Morris, Daniel Morris, and Claira Morris; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Services will be at Lawson–Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., in  Brazil, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Bridgewater officiating. Burial will be at Beech Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
