Mary Alberta Mathes Shepherd, 92, passed away peacefully in her daughter’s home in Mooresville, Ind., on Feb. 26, 2014. She was born on Sept. 23, 1921, in Terre Haute, to Mary Horesley Mathes and Albert Mathes. She was a graduate of Wiley High School, 1940. She was married to Frank P. Shepherd on March 28, 1949. She had been employed by Millard Parrot, the U.S. Post Office, Wabash Fiber Box and Roots Department Store. She was co-owner of the Downtown Hair Designers. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Church of Christ. Alberta loved to travel, read and garden.
She is survived by her daughter, Patti Shepherd Staggs and her husband Darrell of Mooresville; grandsons, Patrick Staggs and his wife Shannon of Delaware, Adam Staggs and his wife Holly of Indianapolis, and Griffin Staggs and his wife Brittanie of North Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Brenda Staggs, Carter Staggs and Arilyn Staggs, all of Delaware; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a very special friend, Toni Roloff.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years, Frank “Pat” Shepherd; and four brothers, Harold Mathes, Billy Mathes, Bob Mathes and Paul Dailey.
Funeral services will take place at noon on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., Terre Haute, with the Rev. Teresa O. Higus officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, and 11 a.m. until the service time on Tuesday.
