Nina Shoemaker

CARBON — Nina Shoemaker, 75, of Carbon, passed away Feb. 15, 2014, at Union Hospital, following a 10-year battle with heart disease. She was born Jan, 4, 1939, in Clay County, one of three daughters born to Emery and Eva Baldwin Waldrop. She graduated from Brazil High School, Class of 1956. Nina was united in marriage to Warren ‘Don’ Shoemaker on March 4, 1958. She was a devoted wife and a stay at home mom while raising her family. She is known as Nana to her grandchildren and many others in our community.

In 1975 she began working outside the home first at Page’s in 1975, and then in 1986, she began working at Hooks, later known as Revco and now CVS. Nina enjoyed her work friends and being out in the public. She was a hard worker, a loyal friend and loved having fun. The past several years Nina has enjoyed working word searches, reading and spending time with her dear family. She attended the Carbon Baptist Church when her health would allow.

Ten years ago, Nina suffered an extensive heart attack. Dr. Neil Kabous has been her dedicated, caring cardiologist during these years. Dr. Kabous called Nina his "Miracle" Patient. The family wants to extend their heartfelt thanks for all the care and compassion shown by Dr. Kabous.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Shoemaker; one sister, Genevieve Hardesty; and niece, Leah Jo Watt.

Survivors include her children, Tamara Archer, Brian Shoemaker and wife Lorie, Sabrina Schlegel and husband Tony, and Carrie Shoemaker, all of Clay County; grandchildren, Jason Dickison, Jeffrey Dickison (Christina Young), Jessica Meneely (Charles J.R.), Natalie Lizanich (Nick), Brady Shoemaker (Chelsea Mershon), Brittany Schlegel, Cody Schlegel, and Andric Branham; great-grandchildren, Zhoe, Zailynn, Constance, Arianna, Madaliss, Connor, Yruik, and Zoey Percival; her dear sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Bill Reberger; nieces and nephew, Lisa Toney, Denisa Timberman, Chantel Purcell, Galen Hardesty and Kea Cauldwell; and other extended family and many friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., Brazil, with Pastors Tom Roeschlein and Barry Corder officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m., and again Thursday prior to services. If friends so desire, donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association.
