Donald Ditto

TERRE HAUTE — Donald Ditto, 85, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Clinton, passed away in his sleep on Feb. 9, 2014, at 1:30 p.m., in his nephew, Gregory Reiber’s residence, where he also resided. He was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Floyd County in Kentucky, to William “Lee” Ditto and Dora Louise Ditto. He was one of 14 children born to his father and one of nine children born to his mother.

One could say that he lived a full and vivid life. He was a veteran of the Air Force and the Army in which he served during the Korean War as a surgical tech. While serving in Korea, Don was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry in action on July 14, 1951, near Chip’o-ri, Korea. During his 20 years of service for his country he was given the chance to travel to many different lands and sent many photographs and mementos back to his family members to share in the joy he gained by these experiences. Upon retiring from the military in 1967, he returned to Clinton and took a job at St. Anthony Hospital in Terre Haute, where he continued working as a surgical tech. He also worked at Anaconda Aluminum Plant and retired in 1988.

His love for traveling took him to other points in the United States as well as back to France and then to Australia. Yet, he found that he liked the Florida climate and took up residence in Ridge Manor from 1992 until 2013 when he returned to Indiana to live with family members.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Clinton until it disbanded. He also loved to dance and hear a good story or joke as well as share his own stories of the life he had the chance to live.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 12 brothers and sisters.

Don never married but he is survived by one sister, Peggy R. Ditto-Reiber, her children, Martin Reiber, Gregory Reiber and Deanna (John) James, their children and several other nieces and nephews and their many children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Frist Funeral Home, in Clinton. Services will be at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Susan Martin officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be performed the American Legion and VFW.
