Ray Merle Scheid

TERRE HAUTE — Ray Merle Scheid, 79, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at I.U. Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born Feb. 23, 1934, in Terre Haute, to John Scheid and Henrietta Kupferer Scheid.

Ray was a 1952 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and an award-winning member of the football team. He also served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Murdock Racing Club, American Legion Post 104, Marine Corps League, 40 & 8 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Men’s Auxiliary.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Lois Irene Hathaway Scheid, whom he married July 31, 1972. He also was preceded in death by his twin brother, Roy Scheid and brother, Paul Scheid; stepson, Kenneth Hathaway; and grandson, Jason Hathaway.  

Ray is survived by his stepson, Steve Hathaway and his wife, Jill of Terre Haute; brothers, Kenneth Scheid and his wife Barbara of Indianapolis and Richard Scheid and his wife Ruth of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Todd Hathaway of Terre Haute, Leslie Hathaway Gray of Bowdon, Ga., and Marc Hathaway and his wife Linda of Harvard, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Alex Hathaway of Harvard, Dalton Hathaway of Terre Haute, Parker Hathaway of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Morrgan Gray and Garret Gray, both of Bowdon; and several nieces, nephews and very close friends.

Services will be Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, with visitation from 12 noon until service time. The Rev. Donna Glazier will be officiating; burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 will conduct military services at the funeral home on Tuesday. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Terre Haute Children's Museum, 727 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47807 or a children’s charity of your choice.
