John Allen Foster

John Allen Foster, 65, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. He retired from the Laborers Union Local 204 at Terre Haute after many years of service. John was proud to have served his country as a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army having served two tours in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970. He was born Dec. 14, 1948, in Terre Haute, to George “Bub” Foster and Sylvia Loraine “Tib” Bercaw Foster.

Survivors include six siblings, a sister, Carolyn Bridgewater of Dana, a brother, Ron Savant and his wife Cheryl of Terre Haute, a brother, Darrell Savant and his companion Bev West of Terre Haute, a sister, Letitia Besherse and her husband Truman of Paris, Ill., a sister, Oralee Pierce of West Terre Haute, and a brother, George Foster and his wife Clara of Rosedale; many nieces and nephews; many cousins, including Reba Endritis and her husband Herb of St. Louis, Mo.; and many friends including Judy Thompson, and his best friend since being teenagers, Buck Eyre of West Terre Haute; and his friends “the seventh street gang”.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

John was a member of the American Legion Post 501 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574, both in West Terre Haute. He loved to collect civil war memorabilia, and spending time with his family and friends.

 Funeral services for John will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Rick May officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park with military graveside rites provided by Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and prior to services Tuesday. The family would like to give a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice.
