James B. Short

TERRE HAUTE — James B. Short passed away on Friday, June 28, 2013. He was born on Oct. 21, 1920, to Anna (Weber) and Herman Short, in Amherst, Ohio, where he came to love everything about northern Ohio including, and most especially, the New York Central Railroad, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and THE Ohio State University. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1938, where he was a member of the track team, the orchestra, and the band where he played the trumpet.  

In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Corps, where he played the trumpet. In May 27, 1947, he married his beloved wife, Marjorie Bannon in Elyria, Ohio. In 1956, they moved to Hollywood, Fla., with their children, Robert and Ann. Mr. Short worked a variety of jobs while he attended Broward Community College to earn his degree in computer programming. He retired as a systems analyst in Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) in 1985. He was a member of  numerous Lutheran churches including St. Paul’s (Amherst), St. Mark’s (Hollywood), and Fairlawn Lutheran Church (Akron, Ohio), where he sang in the choir and served on the church council.

In 2005, he moved to Terre Haute, Ind., and lived in Westminster Village, where he enjoyed playing cards and his numerous friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Anna Weber Short in 1964, and Herman Short in 1956; his wife, Marjorie (1996); and brother, Ted Robert (1998). He is survived by his son Robert (Pauline) Short of Ocala, Fla.; daughter, Ann (Ken) Chirhart of Terre Haute; granddaughter, Elizabeth (Brian) Smallwood; and stepgrandchildren, Kurtus Chirhart and Angie Maglicic.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. officiated by Pastors Dana Newhouse and Don Short. Graveside committal will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst, on Friday, July 5, 2013.  The family requests that donations be given to an organ fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Terre Haute. Arrangements will be handled by DeBaun Springhill Chapel.
