Paul ‘Bus’ Walter Sterling

PARIS, ILL. —  Paul “Bus” Walter Sterling, 89, of Paris, passed away at 6:18 a.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family. He was retired from California State University—Northridge, as a maintenance manager. Paul also worked for UO Colson Company for more than 19 years as a typesetter, and then at the Terre Haute Tribune-Star in the same position. Paul was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Brocton, the son of the late Paul W. and Inez L. (Zeigler) Sterling. He married Wilma Jean Snyder on April 24, 1946, in Henderson, Ky., and she survives. Paul and Jean were married for 68 years.

Paul and Jean lived in Paris for 17 years and then moved to Saugus, Calif, after their children relocated there because they wanted to be near their family. After his retirement in 1991, Paul and Jean returned to Paris and have resided here ever since.

He has two children, a son, James (Sue) Sterling, and a daughter, Vickie (Carl) Conti and both children reside in Peachtree City, Ga. He has a brother, Bob (Julie) Sterling of Charleston; and two grandsons, Chris (Kristen) Morgan who reside in Dacula, Ga., and Andrew Sterling and his girlfriend Phayvanh Inthisone and her daughter, Anne Thongkham, who live in Newnan, Ga. He also was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Bill Sterling.

Paul loved repairing bicycles and was known in Paris as “the Bicycle Man.” He was a jack-of-all-trades and could fix anything. His wife Jean would say that he fixed things around the house before they were even broken.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served from January 1943 to January 1946. He also was a member of American Legion Post 211. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will truly be missed by his family and friends.

For those who wish, the family suggests that memorials be made to Rescue 1 ambulance service or to the American Heart Association.

Services celebrating his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. CDT Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Templeton Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Blue officiating. Burial will follow in Payne Cemetery, north of Brocton. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 211 and VFW Post 3601. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Additional information and online condolences available at: www.TempletonFuneralHome.com
