Thomas ‘Richard’ Maher

TERRE HAUTE — Thomas ‘Richard’ Maher, 74, of Terre Haute, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014, surrounded by his wife and children. He was a loving husband and devoted father who was an accomplished businessman and community servant. He co-owned and operated three successful Terre Haute businesses: Maher Supply, Northside Tire and Country Greens Golf Course. Richard grew up in the village of St. Mary’s with his parents and 10 siblings. Strengthened by his Catholic faith and his family values, Richard became a loving servant of God. He proved this time and time again through his selfless giving, aiding the poor whenever possible and supporting various community programs. He especially enjoyed volunteering for the Kid Kare Project, which supports children of need in Vermillion, Parke and Vigo counties.

Richard was a 1958 graduate of Concannon High School in West Terre Haute. He and his wife, Marcia, shared a love of travel. He enjoyed telling stories about his adventures: dog-sledding in Alaska, driving cattle in Montana, cruising the Mediterranean, and celebrating the Canonization of St. Mother Theodore Guerin in Rome. Richard was a born story-teller and so developed a love for writing. He was proud to publish his poetry in a book, entitled, “Leisure Time Poetry.” He also had his lyrics recorded into a song called, “We Live in America.” Those who knew and loved Richard Maher, will tell you that he never met a stranger and that his legacy comes from a deep love of sharing with others.

The youngest of 11 children, Richard was born on March 4, 1940, to Thomas George and Mary Ellen Starr Maher. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 53 years, Marcia Kay Milbourn Maher. They were united in marriage on Aug. 12, 1961, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Terre Haute. Family members include Annette Powell and her husband Brent of Clinton, Karen Melton and her husband Todd of Goodrich, Mich., Sherrie Mansfield and her husband Greg of West Terre Haute, and Dr. Toby Maher and his wife Allison of Louisville, Ky. They were blessed with eight grandchildren, Chelsea Beasley and her husband Jimmy, Taylor Powell, Elizabeth and Nicholas Melton, Clayton and Colton Minger, Artur and Brian Maher; and three great-grandchildren, Griffin, Kainan, and Paxton Beasley. Richard also is survived by two brothers, Simon and Roger; his sister, Ruth; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marie Garzolini; and six brothers, George, John, Aug, Joe, Ed, and Jim.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., in West Terre Haute, with a rosary at 7 p.m. led by Sister Joan Slobig.  Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Village Church, 3827 N. Arms Pl., St. Mary-of the-Woods, with Father Stephen Giannini officiating.  Friends are welcome to join the family at the funeral home Wednesday morning for a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. and procession to the church for Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kid Kare Project, P.O. Box 424, Clinton, IN 47842 or Providence Food Pantry, Sr. Joseph Fillenwarth, Director, Owens Hall, 1 Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
