Roy Lytton Alford

MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Roy Lytton Alford, 82, of Martinsville, passed away at 11:52 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, with his family by his side at Burnsides Nursing Home in Marshall, Ill. He was born on March 10, 1932, in Manchester, Tenn., the son of James Wesley Alford and Mae Nola Fraizer Alford. On May 10, 1953, he married Iris Marie Smithson in Tennessee.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie Alford of Martinsville; sons, Dale Alford and Jim Dodd and wife Kay, all of Martinsville; daughters, Betty Burkett and husband Bob of Marshall, Sue Borders and husband Don of Janesville, Wis., and Dorothy Grisham and husband Gary of Crane, Mo.; brothers, Hulin Alford of Paris, Ill., and Joe Alford and companion Dennis of Smyrna Beach, Fla.; sister, Lucille Rodgers of Manchester, Tenn.; and 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; brothers, Russell, Layton and Steve Alford; and sisters, Betty Bullard and Hulene Sutton.

Roy worked at Rowe Foundry in Martinsville for 35 years until retiring. Roy was a member of Martinsville Baptist Church and an avid fisherman. He was known to be a competitive man as a horseshoe pitcher and a poker player. There are many fond memories of playing cards in the kitchen while listening to the “Grand Ole Opry” on the radio. He liked to play checkers but found it hard to get anyone to play him because he won all the time. Gardening was a favorite past time too as well digging up small saplings in the woods to drag up into the yard to grow up and prune into full canopies of shade.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CDT on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., in Martinsville, with Brother Art Orndorff officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery, in Martinsville.  Visitation will be held the same day from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2509 S. Neil St., Champaign, IL 61820. To view the full obituary, send a condolence message, light a candle or post photos, visit:
