William Duane Laufman

TERRE HAUTE — William Duane “Bill” Laufman, 73, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday, July 19, 2013, at 1:25 in the afternoon surrounded by friends and family. He was born to Pauline and Ernest Laufman at their home in Walnut Prairie, Ill., leap year, Feb. 29, 1940. He was the eldest of four siblings.

Bill graduated from Wiley High School in 1958, and continued his education at Indiana State University receiving both a bachelor of science and master of science degrees in chemistry. He proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty in Europe in 1961. He was stationed in France.

Bill retired after a long career as a chemist at Eli Lilly and Company in Clinton, and later kept busy working in the chemistry lab at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

Bill Laufman enjoyed his life in Terre Haute. He coached little league baseball, earned a pilot's license, loved fishing, the outdoors, golf, sports, working on his cabin, gardening, reading, bird watching, travel, raising geese and chickens, caring for his cat Calli and the Friday dinners shared with his wife and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen Laufman, and is survived by his loving wife, Jane Snyder Laufman; his children, Kathleen Laufman (Doyle Horning) of Plymouth, Mich., William Duane Laufman Jr. (Claudine) of West Lafayette, Cathy Smith (Tom) of Terre Haute, and Candi Snyder (Kevin Rogers) of Terre Haute; his grandchildren, Tyler Laufman, Cameron Laufman, Ali Laufman, Walker Smith, and Carson Smith; his sisters, Betty Gurrettaz (Jerry) of San Leon, Texas, and Kay Pittman (Lester) and Sue Showecker, all of Terre Haute; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Bill was a loving, charming, and extraordinarily intelligent man who could accomplish anything he set his mind to do. He was a divergent thinker with an original and unforgettable sense of humor. Bill Laufman lived a memorable life. He will be profoundly missed by all who have known and loved him.

Mass of the Christian burial will be on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2405 South Seventh Street, in Terre Haute. Visitation is today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, in Terre Haute. Father Rick Ginther will be officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Family, friends and others whose lives Bill touched are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Swope Art Museum, 25 South 7th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807 or the American Cancer Society, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
