Robert Dale Montgomery

ROSEDALE — Robert Dale “Bob” Montgomery, 88, of Rosedale, died at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Union Hospital in Clinton. He retired from the Federal Penitentiary as plumbing foreman after many years serving as a guard. He also served as the Rosedale Town Marshall. He was born June 9, 1925, in Fontanet, to the late Guy Montgomery and Sarah Edna Van Hook Montgomery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Riggs Montgomery, on Jan. 1, 1986. Survivors include four daughters, Sherry Wade of Clinton, Terri Smith of Rosedale, Sarah Hubbard of Clinton, and Jennie (Donald) Greek of Fontanet; close friend, Laverne Handlin of Terre Haute; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester, Jack, Jim and Morris Montgomery; two sisters, Wilma Chaney and Pauline Snow; his first great-grandson, Robert Alan Bosstick, on Jan. 9, 1994.

He was a 1944 graduate of Rosedale High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving March 1, 1944 to Jan. 19, 1946. He was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church and a life member of American Legion Tony Kashon Post 290 of Rosedale. He served on Rosedale Fire Department, was a school bus driver for Southwest Parke Community Schools, worked for the Town of Rosedale, helped many area farmers and was a mechanic. He loved to fish and enjoyed playing basketball during his younger years.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 N. Main St., in Rosedale, with the Rev. Randy McPike officiating. Military graveside honors will follow in Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may sign an online guest register at:
