Clara Mae Deakins

BRAZIL — Clara Mae Deakins, 71, of Brazil, passed away at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis due to complications following a stroke. Clara was born in Palestine, Ill., on Jan. 14, 1942, the daughter of Geneva Murdock. Clara worked for Dormeyer Industries in Rockville, and Pillsbury in Seelyville for many years. Most recently, she had worked for Morris Manufacturing in Brazil. Clara volunteered at the Clay County Food Pantry for several years. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking homemade noodles, painting, working on her computer and spending time at the ocean.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Everett Deakins and Raymond Garrard Sr.; and a son, Jackie Garrard.

Clara is survived by six children, Dianna Presslor of Chrisman, Ill., Jeff Garrard and wife Stacey of Plainfield, Tina Presslor of Rosedale, Raymond Garrard Jr., Chris Garrard, and Phillip Garrard, all of Brazil; 15 grandchildren, Jody, Rodney, Michael, Brian, Britteni, Brandi, Jeffrey, Dennis, Nicholas, Brandon, Melissa, Sara, Madison, Chloe, and Korben; 15 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Megan, Autumn Mae, Levi, Isaac, Talan, Bailey, Mason, Ethan, Nathaniel, Elijah, Kerstin, Kaleb, Kadyn, and Kamdon; three brothers, Herb, Sam and Bill; a sister, Fern; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.  

Services will be at French Funeral Home, in Brazil, Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at 1 p.m., with Rick Herron officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home, Thursday, from 11 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clay County Food Pantry, 506 E. Pinckley St., Brazil, IN 47834.
