Sister Mary Patricia Peacock

TERRE HAUTE — Sister Mary Patricia Peacock, 85, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 7:10 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2013, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Chicago, to George Thomas and Alice Elizabeth Welsh Peacock.

Sister Mary Pat, as all her friends called her, entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1945, and received the name S. Alice Elizabeth. She professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1952. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and master’s degrees from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Marygrove University. Of her 68 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for 26 years in schools in Indiana and Illinois, specializing in primary grades.  She then turned to parish ministry, serving in St. Dennis Parish in Lockport, Ill., for 10 years and then Assumption Parish in Coal City, Ill., for 14 years. A woman totally committed to service, she returned to the motherhouse in 1998 and volunteered in many outreach ministries including St. Ann Clinic, Providence Food Pantry and the Federal Prison. She was often asked to be the leader at communion services because her reflections on the scriptures were so heartfelt and inspiring.

Sister Mary Pat is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Georgialice Sommer and Dorothy Ann Marr.

The wake is Monday, July 8, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial is Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding.  Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
