Patricia Lynne Wolfe Von Spreckelsen

TERRE HAUTE — Patricia Lynne Wolfe Von Spreckelsen, 71, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday evening, June 28, 2013, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born Sept. 6, 1941, in Indianapolis, to Ellis L. and Grace Ham Wolfe. She was reared in Speedway and, as a child, spent many happy weekends with grandparents and a favorite aunt in Paoli.

Pat attended Indianapolis Methodist Hospital School of Nursing from 1958-1960, during which time she served as editor/chief of the school newspaper "The Reflector" .Her early interests in journalism and the arts led her to change her course of study and pursue her dream of a career in the humanities.

Pat attended Indiana State University where she completed both bachelor's and master's degrees in humanities. She was graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1967. She was a member of the NEA. Pat did her student teaching at Wiley High School. She taught English for many years in the Wabash Valley, including at Glenn Jr. High School, Chauncey Rose Jr. High School, McClean Jr. High School and North Vigo High School. She loved North Vigo High School and especially loved North's beloved first principal, Carl Riddle. She later taught English and Humanities enrichment classes known as Supper Club until 2001. She also taught Shakespeare as an adjunct instructor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Pat additionally served many students by participating in the Vigo County Upward Bound Program and providing private tutoring for others. Her abiding interest in the development and welfare of her students was well known throughout the Wabash Valley. Both her counsel and skill were sought by many parents. Pat's professional interests were broad but focused on the literary philosophy as applied to world religions and on the enhancement of public education. Pat's interest in literary philosophy is well expressed in many of her favorite works such as Omar Khayyam's eloquent poem the "Rubyyat". Her favorite authors were Melville, Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe. She was an accomplished pianist and was a personal friend of Andre Watts. Pat was also a prolific writer and poet. She loved to travel and did so extensively, traveling to England, Scotland, Wales and to her most favorite of all destinations-the Island of Skye.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Von Spreckelsen Jr., who passed away Aug. 14, 2012. Patricia and George we married in 1961. Together, Pat and George shared a love of learning, classical music, literature, poetry and fine art. They also shared a love of all things Scottish. She also loved her cat, Cinnamon, who lived a remarkable and happy life at their home, Century House, for some 15 years.

A memorial celebration of the life of Patricia Von Spreckelsen and her late husband, George F. Von Spreckelsen Jr. will be held Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Boo's Crossroads Cafe from 12 noon to 2 p.m., where both Pat and George were daily customers and friends. Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., was entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Pat would undoubtedly be pleased for any assistance made to the Vigo County Historical Society or the Vigo County Humane Society.
