A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Grandview Cemetery, in Terre Haute, for Dora “Dode” Gardner, age 89, formerly of Harmony, who passed away on July 14, 2012, at Emory University Hospital, in Atlanta.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Rebecca Rose Davis Gardner; brothers, Thomas R. Gardner and John Robert Gardner; and son-in-law, Dev Norwood.
Those left to cherish Dode's memory include his wife, Mary Orman; children, Ginny Rose Norwood (Dev) of Hampton, Ga., Michael L. Gardner (Rita) of Austell, Ga., Patty L. Steadham (Mike) of Leesburg, Fla., and Sally Knause of Paducah, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Rosemary Bowers of Erie, Pa., and Bessie (Merlin) of Mesa, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Betty L. Gardner of Harmony.
Dode was a World War II veteran. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator and aerial gunner on a B24. He was assigned as a replacement crew to the 15th AF 343rd bombing group. They made runs over the Ploesti Oil Fields in Bavaria and were awarded the Air Medal for bravery. In 1948 he returned to Harmony. 1950 saw him marrying Mary E Orman and a return to the Air Force in 1951. He spent his next 18 years of service with the Air Force Office of Investigations as a Special Agent. He then spent 11 years as a Special Agent with HUD in Atlanta, and retired in 1983.
